I receive a lot of questions about sex toys, and questions regarding body-safe materials are super important to me. What are non-toxic body-safe sex toys? How do I know if a sex toy is body safe when I receive it?
Over the years with my sex toy shopping, I have had to avoid some horrible toys that even marketed themselves as body-safe. Until I took classes relating to health, the environment and chemistry I had no idea how toxic some of these products truly were! After some research on sex toys, I started to feel like information about body-safe materials was not accessible enough!
With that said, I compiled some research so that you can make the best decision for yourself and only use medical grade materials so you can know what is going inside of you!
What is a Body-Safe Non-Toxic Sex Toy?
Body Safe Sex Toys are made from medical grade materials making them non-porous and inert.
I personally ONLY use medical-grade silicone, stainless steel and glass toys. I may be open to trying some quartz stone toys in the future and when I do I will update this post with my experiences there.
- Non-porous – Porosity is the measure of spaces in materials that allow for bacteria to grow.
- Inert – relatively non-reactive both chemically and biologically. we want materials that spend a long time in our body to not release chemicals into our bodies.
What Sex Toys are Body Safe?
Types of body-safe materials:
A proper glass toy can be quite the experience. I love my glass toy in both my pussy and ass. A proper glass toy is sturdy, even surface and free of any cracks before every single use. I have a glass tentacle toy that I love to use. These Glass Heart Wands feels so great for vaginal stimulation as well as anal pleasure. I chose these toys specifically for anal as they sterilize so easily. These toys are made out of crystal glass and they are under $15 each or grab the whole set for $48 now!
Be very careful about using a butt plug with a jewel – cleaning or boiling it. I do not recommend using other metals for sex toys, stainless steel is the most reliable and healthy over time. Be sure to read the instructions for each toy if they are provided! Boiling a toy with a jewel, in the end, may not be a good idea, so I am sure to clean mine by hand before and after each use. Toxic Materials to Avoid
These products are NOT Body Safe Sex Toys! Avoid using these products and putting them inside of your body!
Unlike body-safe materials, toxic dildos often have a very bad smell, soft plastic or even jelly-like texture. The bad smell will be different for each toxic toy. Usually, it smells a lot like burnt rubber or weird plastic. If your toy has an odor, return it or discard it immediately.

- Plastic Sex Toys
- Skin Safe Vs. Body Safe Definitions
These two terms are different, Skin-safe is an unregulated term and does not indicate any actual safety concerns. Due to the complex issues caused by synthetic products and unregulated toxic products it is highly advised to only use BODY SAFE sex toys. A body-safe sex toy is a toy that is both non-toxic and non-porous.
The unregulated sex toy industry
Are sex toys regulated by the FDA? NO.
Unfortunately, there is no real regulation on sex toys. Their terms like there are regulations for things like food, medicine, and other object we use for internal body contact. It’s sad but true, there is no real regulation so we highly recommend buying sex toys only from trusted, health-minded, reliable blog sources, as well as trusted 100% body-safe sex toy sellers like Lovense.
