Cannabis and Pain Relief

Cannabis as Opioid Substitution

There is research that suggests cannabis is on a increase as a substitution from other pain relievers such as opioids which have undesirable side effects. In the United States all states are consistent with using cannabis as a treatment for chronic pain. Cannabis covers a wide range of symptoms It has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects that gives cannabis users the relief they need.

THC Tetrahydrocannabinol interacts with brain receptors in the cannabinoid system in order to relieve pain. THC also induces a feeling of euphoria, a “high” that is often followed with dry mouth. This euphoria can help many people relax while dealing with the chronic pain they may have.

  1. Thank you, Miss Dahlia, for a very well written and thoughtful post on the real benefits of cannabis for chronic pain.

The CDC reported, in 2018, that 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. That is one in five of every adults in the US. The approach to chronic pain has been dominated by the pharmaceutical opioid industry since the end of the 20th century. This industry led the way to incorporate pain as “the fifth vital sign” (correctly), and then argued that the treatment depended on opioid augmentation (incorrectly). The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) jumped on board with Purdue Pharma, and other pharmaceutical companies, and pushed opioids as the solution.

I know this, for a fact. How? I was a primary care physician in an accredited residency program from 1998 to 2001. I got my board certification by answering board questions that involved ‘opioids’ as correct answer.

Flash forward almost 20 years. Our country, rural and urban, has been decimated by opioids. Overdose, addiction, and families destroyed. And, chronic pain patients are still in pain. Why? Opioids don’t work for long term pain. Ever. They work for acute pain and cancer pain. They work for neurogenic pain, in the acute setting. They DO NOT help chronic pain. Our bodies up-regulate production of opioid receptors and increase tolerance with chronic opioid use. Are bodies just need higher doses after a short time. Then, they need higher doses. And then… higher doses. It’s like catching a hemorrhage in a bucket and not binding the wound.

Chronic pain is real. It impacts mood, memory, lifestyle, relationships, and over all wellbeing. Are there alternatives? YES. I have many patients who have weaned off opioids and only use a cannabis product to treat their pain. Do we need more studies and research into the wonders of this medicine? Yes! But, the discussion starts with thoughtful and intelligent posts like this.

Thanks for your time and effort with this post Dahlia. It’s important and well sourced. It took time and passion. Keep it up.

I practice primary care in Washington State and, I am lucky. I can recommend cannabis treatment. It works. Miss Dahlia’s recommendations are sourced. They are solid.
